Ethiopia’s Wars, Sea Ambitions and Nile Dam Fuel Fears of Wider Conflict

Renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region is taking place alongside a worsening confrontation between Ethiopia and Eritrea, former allies whose relations have deteriorated, according to an Associated Press report.

The report notes that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 for making peace with neighboring Eritrea, and that a year later their armies joined forces against Tigrayan fighters in northern Ethiopia. It states that the alliance has since unraveled.

The analysis looks at how Ethiopia’s wars, its sea ambitions and the Nile dam dispute are contributing to fears of a wider conflict.
